The Ether.fi Cash Card is a crypto credit card that brings Ethereum staking returns into everyday card spending. It is issued by an overseas bank and has circulated in crypto communities since 2025. In Taiwan, overseas-issued cards can run into local acquirer rules and issuer allowlists. The same card may work at 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Momo, or Taiwan Railways through Apple Pay but fail through LINE Pay, or work with a card number online while Apple Pay is declined. That is why people keep asking where the Ether.fi card works.

This guide summarizes community reports and Penchan’s own tests from October 2025 through September 2026. Issuer policies and merchant acquiring systems change, so these are observations from a particular period. Check current official notices or make your own small test before relying on a payment method.

If you want to move USDC into USD and fund a brokerage account for US stocks rather than spend by card, see the illustrated FluidKey-to-IBKR guide. For a full index of crypto-card, deposit/withdrawal, and trading-tool guides, return to the Crypto guides home.

30-Second Takeaway

Whether a payment goes through depends on the payment method and merchant acquirer, not just the brand name. Three patterns stand out:

First, the same merchant can give very different results across payment methods. At frequently searched merchants such as 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Momo, and Taiwan Railways, success rates vary noticeably between LINE Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and entering the card number online.

Second, LINE Pay is a useful baseline for foreign cards in Taiwan and accounted for many of the successful community-reported payments. But LINE Pay has repeatedly returned “unsupported issuing bank” at convenience stores, where Apple Pay may work instead.

Third, mainland China has more reported consumer-use options than expected. Community members report successful card spending through Alipay, WeChat Pay, Taobao (with USD settlement selected), and Meituan. Card application/KYC eligibility and the ability to spend are separate questions.

Applying, Rewards, and Borrow Mode

Application and review time

Community reports vary widely on the time from online application to receiving the physical card. Some took a few weeks; others waited more than two months. Applicants in Chinese-speaking communities have reported different support response times and review queues. Keep your application number and check progress through in-app support if needed.

Rewards

Some months bring special reward campaigns, such as an offer described as “20% back on up to USD 100.” Eligibility may depend on ETHFI holdings, card tier, and that campaign’s rules. Community discussion has not settled on one consistent interpretation, so check the current in-app notice.

Who Borrow Mode may suit

Borrow Mode lets cardholders spend against crypto collateral without immediately selling the assets. Community discussions generally find it more relevant for larger holdings. For small balances, liquidation risk and interest costs may outweigh the benefit; run the numbers first.

Deposits and card upgrades

The effect of moving ETHFI into a vault on card-upgrade eligibility changed during the second half of 2025. Upgrade rules change often; use Ether.fi’s current announcements or in-app prompts.

Why the same merchant can behave differently across payment methods

There are three layers behind the difference.

The issuer is the first. Ether.fi Cash Card is issued overseas, and its bank may maintain allowlists for particular payment routes such as LINE Pay. This is a common source of the “unsupported issuing bank” message reported by users.

The acquirer is the second. Convenience stores, big-box retailers, and restaurant chains may use different acquiring banks. Even branches of the same chain can have different acquiring setups, so one branch may accept a payment while another declines it.

The payment protocol is the third. LINE Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and manually entering a card number online use different payment protocols. 3D Secure triggers and tokenization can affect whether a transaction succeeds.

Suggested order of payment methods

The accumulated tests suggest trying a mobile wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay first, then LINE Pay if it fails. For online purchases where both Apple Pay and LINE Pay are rejected, try entering the card number directly; expect a 3D Secure check.

💊 Healthcare, clinics, and insurance

Community testing shows a clear pattern:

At hospitals, overseas cards may work at a staffed counter, while most self-service payment kiosks do not. Multiple community tests support this finding. When paying a hospital bill, go to a staffed counter and avoid the kiosk.

MerchantResultMethods reported workingNotes
Dental clinics⚠️LINE Pay works at some; in-person card fails at some.
Mercuries Life / KGI Life / China Life❌Automatic payments; community reports say overseas cards are not accepted.

Cathay Century Insurance (travel and property insurance)✅Community reports say Ether.fi works consistently.
Cathay Life (investment-linked insurance)❌Community reports say only Cathay United Bank cards work; other cards usable in Taiwan do not.
Online insurance credit-card payments⚠️Card entry works conditionally and varies by insurer; ask your agent or policyholder service line.

🚨 Warning: A PTT post relayed by the community described someone whose card was frozen after paying Taiwan Mobile. One case does not mean every cardholder will have the same outcome. Unless necessary, avoid setting the Ether.fi card as a recurring telecom bill payment to reduce the chance of triggering risk controls. If you still want to use it, test a small payment and monitor it for a month before making it recurring.

Cross-Border Spending: Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan

We have a separate international guide to cross-border use, covering 13 markets/regions in four languages:

Key cross-border findings: Alipay has strong reported consumer-spending usability, while WeChat Pay results vary by merchant acquirer. Multiple successful reports involve in-person spending at HKD-charging merchants in Hong Kong, making the card useful for travel or shopping there. Octopus cannot be linked.

Comparing Other Crypto Cards

In community discussions, the Ether.fi Cash Card is most often compared with two other cards:

vs Crypto.com Card (CDC)

A common community description is: “I used to buy with CDC; only certain products didn’t work.” CDC has a larger Taiwan user base and more developed local support, including Chinese-language customer service and Taiwan communities. Ether.fi differs in linking staking returns to card spending.

vs Ready Card

“Taiwan users occasionally get 10% back” is a common description of Ready Card in Taiwan. Ready Card’s campaign-based high rewards and Ether.fi’s longer-term staking returns are different approaches and do not directly exclude each other. Some community members keep two or three cards and choose based on the use case.

The Ether.fi MEXC co-branded card is another Ether.fi product, with benefits that differ from the standard Cash Card. We plan to cover it in a separate article.

We plan a separate “Best Crypto Cards 2026” comparison of Ether.fi, Crypto.com Card, Ready Card, and the MEXC co-branded card.

Frequently Asked Questions

When LINE Pay links a foreign card, the issuer checks its allowlist. The “unsupported issuing bank” message means the issuer declined the route LINE Pay uses; it is not a limitation of the LINE Pay app itself. The same card may still work at another merchant or branch.

Q2: What should I do if Apple Pay fails at 7-Eleven?

The community’s suggested fallback order is: (1) try LINE Pay; (2) try Google Pay; (3) try another branch of the same chain, since the acquirer may differ.

Q3: How do I pay with Ether.fi on Momo?

On Momo’s checkout page, choose “Credit card” and enter your Ether.fi card number; do not choose Apple Pay or LINE Pay. After entering the number, complete 3D Secure (SMS or push OTP). Official Momo products sometimes fail, while marketplace seller listings have a higher reported success rate.

Q4: Can I use Ether.fi for Netflix, Steam, ChatGPT, and Claude subscriptions?

  • Netflix: Tested and failed.
  • Steam: No. It accepts only Taiwan-issued credit cards.
  • ChatGPT subscription: Penchan.co editors tested it successfully and received rewards.
  • Claude subscription: Penchan.co editors tested it successfully, without rewards.
  • Claude API credit top-up: Penchan.co editors tested it successfully and received rewards.

Q5: Why doesn’t PX Mart work at all?

PX Mart’s acquiring system and payment gateway do not accept binding foreign cards. Binding also fails through the PX Pay app; multiple community reports quote the message “foreign cards cannot be linked, so they cannot be used.”

Q6: Can I use Ether.fi at hospitals?

Staffed-counter payments may work (many hospitals’ staffed counters accept foreign cards), while most self-service payment kiosks do not. Go to a staffed counter.

Community members report successful spending through Alipay and WeChat Pay. Keep in mind: (1) KYC/application eligibility and ability to spend are separate; (2) WeChat Pay reports are conditional on the merchant’s acquirer. You can link and test the card in Taiwan before traveling.

Q8: What should I do if 3D Secure fails?

(1) Make sure the Ether.fi app has a configured way to receive OTPs. (2) Some online transactions require you to unfreeze the card in the Ether.fi app. (3) If it still fails, try the same type of mobile wallet (Apple Pay / Google Pay), which often bypasses the failing 3D Secure flow.

Q9: Should I choose Ether.fi or Crypto.com Card?

For Taiwan-only spending, a local card usually has the simplest and strongest return. If you are comfortable holding crypto for yield and need cross-border spending, consider Ether.fi (staking returns) or Crypto.com (CRO staking). Ready Card suits people who track high-reward campaigns. The three cards serve different purposes, and some community members use two or three depending on the purchase.

Q10: Is Ether.fi a virtual credit card? How is it different from virtual cards from banks such as Taishin and E.SUN?

Ether.fi Cash Card belongs to the crypto credit/debit card category. It is different from digital virtual credit cards issued by Taiwan banks, such as Taishin Richart Life, E.SUN Wallet, and HSBC digital cards.

There are three main differences:

First, the issuer differs. Taiwan digital cards are issued by local banks; Ether.fi is issued by an overseas institution.

Second, the funding source differs. Local digital cards debit a New Taiwan dollar account. Ether.fi draws on crypto assets such as USDC and ETH, with Borrow Mode available for spending against crypto collateral.

Third, merchant compatibility differs. Local digital cards are highly compatible with Taiwan acquiring systems and can be linked to PX Mart, JKo, and PX Pay. Ether.fi is issued overseas, so local acquirer support is limited; that is the central issue discussed in this guide.
