When you try to work out what an AI startup is worth, the valuation grabs the most attention and misleads the most. Perplexity’s valuation was reported climbing from about $500 million to about $20 billion in under two years, and its annualized revenue reached hundreds of millions of dollars. But these numbers come from funding rounds and press reports. They are not market prices, and they are not audited financials.

This piece covers three things: the funding ladder, how to read the revenue, and why gross margin is the real test. To get to know the company first, start with what kind of company Perplexity is. Perplexity is not listed yet. This is a category analysis, not investment advice.

One Table to Understand the Funding Ladder

DateAmount RaisedPost-Money ValuationLead / Participants
January 2024~$74 million~$520 millionLed by IVP; Nvidia, Jeff Bezos (personally), and others participated
December 2024$500 million~$9 billionIVP, SoftBank Vision Fund, and others
June 2025$500 million~$14 billionLed by Accel
July 2025$100 million (extension of prior round)~$18 billionNvidia, SoftBank, NEA, and others
September 2025$200 million~$20 billionLead investor undisclosed

The September 2025 round is the last one that has closed. In August 2026, according to The Information (as reported by Reuters), Nvidia was in talks to join a new round at a valuation of more than $30 billion. As of October 2026, no close has been announced. Each valuation in the table is a price negotiated between investors and the company, not a stock price traded every day on a public market.

Perplexity valuation ladder bar chart: about $520 million in early 2024, reported climbing to about $20 billion by September 2025, roughly 38x in under two years

A 38x Valuation Jump in Two Years, Only Clear Once You Place It Among Peers

Roughly 38x in about 20 months is fast, even for AI. Next to its peers, its position is clearer:

CompanyLatest Round ValuationAs Of
OpenAI~$852 billionMarch 2026
Anthropic~$965 billionMay 2026
Mistral AIMore than €21 billionSeptember 2026
Perplexity~$20 billionSeptember 2025

OpenAI and Anthropic are both more than 40x Perplexity. Perplexity is in the same range as France’s Mistral: a mid-size player below the top tier.

A rough check is valuation divided by annualized revenue. $20 billion against $750 million is about 27x. If the $30-billion-plus round closes, it would be more than 40x. That multiple is a bet that the answer engine can take a share of search from Google.

Annualized Revenue Tops $750 Million, but Read It This Way

The Financial Times reported that its annualized recurring revenue was estimated at over $450 million in March 2026. The Information reported in August that annualized revenue was above $750 million, up from under $250 million at the start of the year. Part of the growth came from Perplexity Computer.

These are all media estimates, not audited annual revenue, and the company has not disclosed whether it is profitable.

The Real Test Lies in Gross Margin: A Middle Layer’s Cost Structure

Perplexity is a middle-layer company. Each time a user asks a question, it often has to call a model from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, and that API bill rises and falls with usage. On the other side are fixed cloud commitments. According to Bloomberg, in January 2026 it signed a three-year, $750 million contract with Microsoft Azure, while AWS remains its main cloud. In September 2026 it also signed a multi-year partnership with Crusoe to train and run its own models on Crusoe’s Nvidia GPU clusters; the amount was not disclosed.

Variable costs are hard to push down, fixed costs can’t be avoided, and gross margin is squeezed in between. The more it relies on outside models, the more its margin depends on its suppliers. That is why it builds its own models, such as Sonar. For the full picture of how it assembles its suppliers, see Perplexity’s middleman dilemma.

Will It IPO? Can Retail Investors Get In?

Perplexity is not listed yet, so you can’t buy its stock in a brokerage account. CEO Aravind Srinivas told CNBC in June 2026 that the company plans to go public in 2028.

Channels that claim to sell “pre-IPO shares” have low liquidity and opaque information and pricing. For ordinary investors, both the risk and the barrier to entry are high. This piece only organizes public data and is not investment advice. Do your own research and invest within your means.

What Remains Undisclosed

  • Official valuation documents: both the ~$20 billion and the $30-billion-plus figures are press reports.
  • Gross margin and cash burn: the company has not disclosed them.
  • Paying users and unit economics: the free-to-paid conversion rate, and how much revenue and cost each user brings, are not disclosed.
  • Board and ownership structure: the full board list, and whether investors hold special share terms, are not public.

Penchan’s summary

Perplexity is a textbook AI startup case. It grows fast enough to push its valuation higher round after round. But it sits in the middle layer, it doesn’t own all of the most valuable models, and so its gross margin depends on its suppliers.

To judge whether $20 billion is expensive, watch three variables: how well it turns free users into paying ones, whether its own models can bring costs down, and whether its growth flattens as Google and OpenAI give direct answers too.
