ChatGPT Atlas is a browser OpenAI launched in October 2025. Its defining feature is that ChatGPT is built right inside it. While you browse any page, you can call up ChatGPT at any moment to understand the content, answer your questions, or run an agent mode that can open tabs, click around, and complete multi-step tasks automatically.

It represents a wave of AI companies competing for browser-level access to users. Perplexity has Comet, Google is embedding Gemini into Chrome, and OpenAI chose to build its own browser outright. Below is a clear rundown of what Atlas can do, how to install it, whether it costs money, and whether it works where you are.

ChatGPT Atlas interface

What ChatGPT Atlas Is

The short version: it is a browser built around ChatGPT as its core. A normal browser has you reading a webpage on your own and opening a separate tab to search when you have questions. Atlas collapses that step — the sidebar is ChatGPT, and it can see the page you are already on. It can summarize, explain, and compare right there without any copying and pasting.

For anyone who already asks ChatGPT about nearly everything, Atlas is designed to eliminate that “copy this, open a new tab, paste it in” loop.

Core Features

  • Browse and ask at the same time: Call up ChatGPT on any webpage and it understands the current page content to answer your questions directly.
  • Browser memories: An opt-in feature that lets Atlas remember your browsing context. Deleting your browsing history also removes the associated memories.
  • Agent mode: ChatGPT automatically opens tabs, clicks, and operates the browser to complete multi-step tasks. Currently a preview feature, open to Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers.

Who Can Use It, and How to Install

The hard requirement right now is macOS: you need an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 14.2 or later. The install steps look roughly like this:

  1. Download the .dmg from the official page, drag it to Applications, and open Atlas.
  2. Sign into your ChatGPT account.
  3. Import existing bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history.
  4. Use the new tab to ask questions directly, or enter a URL. Switch to agent mode when you need the browser to act on your behalf.
  5. Manage default browser settings, language, privacy preferences, and data controls in Settings.

⚠️ Windows is not available yet. The official documentation says Windows, iOS, and Android are “coming soon,” but macOS is still the only supported platform. If you use Windows, you cannot install Atlas today — and for many users, that is the critical limitation.

Pricing

Atlas is free to download. What actually determines the experience is your ChatGPT subscription tier:

PlanApproximate monthly priceWhat matters
Free / GoFree / lower tierBasic features available
PlusUS$20Standard full experience, agent mode preview
ProHigher-usage tierMaximum usage
BusinessAround US$25/seatTeam use, content not used for training

Actual pricing and exactly which Atlas features are available at each tier change quickly. Always check the official OpenAI page.

How It Compares to Other AI Browsers

  • Perplexity Comet: Another AI browser that shifted to free in October 2025, with a paid Max tier that adds a background assistant.
  • Google Chrome + Gemini: Google has been embedding Gemini directly into Chrome, with rollouts in the US beginning in 2025 and expansion to parts of Asia-Pacific in 2026 — though publicly announced availability has not included Taiwan.
  • Microsoft Edge + Copilot: Edge’s built-in Copilot can also read portions of the current browser window to provide assistance.

This space only opened up in 2026. Features, regional availability, and plans are all still moving fast.

Privacy and Risks

Two things worth knowing upfront:

  • Training data opt-in, not opt-out: Using browsing content to improve the model is off by default. You have to turn it on yourself. Business and Enterprise content is never used for training. Browser memories are optional and can be deleted along with your history.
  • Agent mode carries prompt injection risk: OpenAI explicitly warns that automated web interactions can be influenced by hidden malicious instructions embedded in pages. For irreversible actions — logins, payments, deletions — keep a human checking the steps.

Who Should Try It Now

  • Good fit: You use a Mac, you are already a heavy ChatGPT user, and you want to skip the “copy the webpage, open ChatGPT, paste it in” step.
  • Wait for now: If you use Windows, there is nothing to install yet. Check back when Windows support arrives.
  • Use with care: Agent mode is genuinely useful, but do not hand it sensitive or irreversible tasks without a second look.
