Bottom line first: the free plan is enough for most people
Gemini Free can do more than most people expect. You can ask questions, translate, check facts, create research reports, generate images, and have spoken conversations without paying.
If you open Gemini no more than five times a day, seriously consider staying on the free plan. The reasons to pay are clear: you want to generate video, use the Pro model heavily for reasoning, use a coding agent, or need a large amount of cloud storage.
Students should read the complete Gemini student plan guide before looking at prices. Offers vary by country: eligible US students may receive AI Pro, while students in many other countries may receive AI Plus.
The features and prices below are based on Google’s official pages. Google changes plan contents frequently, and prices vary by country.
What can the free plan do?
The free plan primarily uses the Flash model. Flash is fast and usually begins answering within a second or two. It also provides limited access to the Pro model, with a quota that can vary.

Chat and writing: It handles everyday work such as questions and answers, translation, email drafts, and brainstorming.
Deep Research: Give it a question and it searches the web, then organizes the findings into a research report. The free plan includes it, but only for a limited number of runs each day.
Image generation: Generate images with Nano Banana 2 by describing what you want in natural language.
Gemini Live: Speak with Gemini directly instead of typing. On a phone, you can also turn on the camera or share your screen so it can answer questions about what it sees.
File uploads: Upload documents, spreadsheets, photos, and videos for Gemini to read, or add NotebookLM notebooks.
Canvas and Gems: Canvas is a workspace for revising documents or code while you chat. Gems are custom assistants, such as a Gem dedicated to improving your English.
Connect Gmail, Docs, and Drive: Once connected, Gemini can summarize messages or find content in your files. You must first connect the Google Workspace apps in settings, and Keep Activity must be turned on.
Usage and age limits
Usage is capped, but Google does not publish the numbers. Its official pages describe the free plan only as having “standard limits.” Google does not disclose the daily number of chats, Deep Research runs, or generated images, and it may change the limits without notice. Deep Research may be temporarily unavailable during peak periods.
Video generation is not included in the free plan. It starts with Google AI Plus.
Age requirements:
- Gemini app and image generation: at least 13, or the applicable age in your country
- Image editing: at least 18
- Deep Research and Gemini in Gmail: at least 18
- Company Workspace accounts: at least 18 and on a supported company plan
- School accounts: the school administrator must enable access

| Cloud storage | 15 GB included with a Google Account | 400 GB | 5 TB | At least 20 TB |
Prices vary by country, so confirm the final amount at checkout. Three questions can help you decide:
Do you often hit usage limits or want more access to the Pro model? Upgrade to AI Plus. The Pro model’s advantage is clearest on tasks that need more reasoning, such as analyzing long PDFs or finding contradictions in reports.
Do you want to generate video inside Gemini? You need at least AI Plus.
Do you need the Jules coding agent or already need substantial cloud storage? Choose AI Pro. If you already have large photo backups or many Drive files, AI Pro bundles AI features with 5 TB of storage.
If your answer to all three is “no,” stay on the free plan indefinitely.

Penchan’s take
Gemini is my main image-generation tool right now. I use it every day for article illustrations and social media visuals. I started with Midjourney through Discord, then moved to Gemini mainly because good instructions in natural language can produce images quickly. It follows prompt directions such as a colored-pencil style or no gradients fairly consistently.
To be fair, Gemini also has frustrating limitations. Sometimes it responds that it cannot do one thing or another, and I have to work around the restriction by changing the prompt. When I only need a simple illustration, those limits can occasionally interrupt my workflow.
For work that needs a locked-in style, such as a logo or consistent character, I switch to nano-banana-pro. For batch generation and illustrative images, I continue to use Gemini. Each has its place.
