“Can I use ChatGPT without paying?” Yes. The free plan can do more than many people expect, but it has limits. This guide explains what you can and can’t do so you can decide whether to upgrade.
What Can the Free Plan Do?
Text chat has no message limit, so it works well for everyday questions, translation, and organizing notes.
Text chat is fully open. Use it as much as you like. As of 2026-09-29, the model is GPT-5.6 Luna. The “Think” button lets it spend more time reasoning, and it uses GPT-5.6 Luna for that too.
Allowances and features reflect the date checked. OpenAI changes them often, so consult the official pages for current details.
Image generation is available on the free plan, with a separate usage limit. Paid plans differ in allowance and speed.
Deep research is available in a limited form on the free plan. Its allowance changes with policy.
File analysis supports uploads and summaries of PDFs, images, and Word documents.
Web search is available on the free plan, and search results include source links.
GPTs made by other people are available to use. The GPT Store has hundreds of thousands of them.

Limits of the Free Plan
The limits are concentrated in three areas.
Image generation is limited. The free plan may not be enough if you need lots of illustrations or social media assets.
Flagship models aren’t available. GPT-5.6 Luna is capable for everyday use, but flagship models have an edge in complex reasoning and long-document analysis. GPT-5.6 Sol requires Plus or above. The latest GPT-6 Astra also requires Plus or above; on Plus, it is available only in ChatGPT Work and Codex.
You can’t create new GPTs. As of 2026-09-29, no personal plan, including Plus and Pro, allows users to create new GPTs. OpenAI announced on 2026-09-11 that it plans to retire custom GPTs.
Other limits include lower allowances for deep research and voice conversations than on paid plans, though these matter less for many users.

Who Is the Free Plan For?
Everyday use: Unlimited text chat is enough for questions, translation, and writing emails.
Lots of images or advanced tools: Consider upgrading if you run out of allowance.
Trying ChatGPT out: Start with Free and decide after a few weeks.
How Do You Get Started?
- Visit chatgpt.com or download the mobile app.
- Sign up with an email address, or use Google / Apple sign-in.
- Start chatting.
You don’t need a credit card to sign up. Try a few questions you would usually Google, then upload a PDF and ask for a summary.
Free vs Plus: Should You Pay?
Reasons to upgrade include needing more image generations, wanting flagship models, or needing advanced development tools. If you mainly ask questions and translate, Free is enough.
Plan comparison: Go (US$8/month in the US) offers more image and tool usage, with the same model as Free. Plus (US$20/month) includes more advanced models. Pro (from US$100/month) offers flagship models and full development features; new subscriptions to the US$200 plan have been paused since 2026-09-10. Prices in Taiwan are shown at checkout.

Penchan’s Experience
I subscribe to Pro. I upgraded for the flagship model’s reasoning depth, the generous image generation allowance, and advanced development tools. I tried Go for a month and found it didn’t quite fit, then moved to Plus. I had created a GPT for Traditional Chinese proofreading that saved a lot of time polishing wording.
