On October 21, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Duet, a standalone app that turns Claude into a proactive AI agent (an AI that does things on its own): it checks the apps you have connected, then tells you what needs your attention. It is a research preview, open only to Pro and Max (Claude’s paid plans) users in the US who sign up for the waitlist, and it is not available outside the US yet.

What Claude Duet can do

  • A morning brief every day: ranks your inbox and calendar by priority and drafts the next steps.
  • Checks on its own schedule: Anthropic says it looks at your accounts “every few hours” and messages you only when something needs you.
  • Does the work: schedules meetings, builds documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, and dashboards, and prepares invoice payment reminders.
  • Connects to your apps: more than 6,000 connectors (tools that let AI reach other apps) and plugins, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Stripe, and Shopify.
  • Keeps the conversation going: talk by voice or text. It continues your main conversation, and you can open separate channels by topic.
  • Buys things for you: it can pay with Link (Stripe’s digital wallet) or Shop Pay (Shopify’s payment wallet), using a one-time card for each purchase, limited to the amount you approve.

How it differs from the Claude you already use

The regular Claude answers when you ask. Claude Duet comes to you first.

It works on its own cloud computer. Anthropic says this is a virtual machine with its own browser, so it keeps working even when your phone or laptop is off.

It reuses the memory, skills (instructions that teach Claude to do a task a set way), and connected apps in your Claude account. It is a separate app, with iOS and Android versions, and it also works on the claude.ai website.

Safety design: what always needs your approval

The official help center says Claude Duet always asks you before it does any of these:

  • Sending messages
  • Making payments
  • Signing documents
  • Deleting anything

While it waits for your approval, it can keep working on other tasks. Even if you say yes, there are three things it will not do: trade securities, move money between accounts, or log in to someone else’s account.

Other protections:

  • It cannot see your passwords or login tokens. When a password is needed, you fill in a separate form on your own device, so the password never appears in the conversation.
  • When you connect a payment account, it sees only things like the card type and last four digits, not the full card number or bank account number.
  • Sensitive information such as health and finances is shared only when you explicitly tell it to.

Anthropic also admits plainly that its defenses against prompt injection (instructions hidden in web pages or emails to trick an AI into following them) are not perfect. The help center says it treats outside content as information, not as instructions.

Who can use it, and what does it cost?

  • Region: the official help center says the research preview is open only in the US.
  • Plan: you need a US Claude account, a Pro or Max plan, and a waitlist invitation. Invitations go out in waves, and there is no guarantee of when your turn comes.
  • Price: included in Pro and Max plans during the preview, at no extra charge.
  • Usage: it shares your plan’s five-hour and weekly usage limits with regular Claude, and background work counts too.
  • Welcome bonus: when you get access, you receive a one-time full usage reset (the five-hour and weekly allowances are recalculated together), which must be used by November 30, 2026.
  • Team plans: Team and Enterprise cannot use it yet; Anthropic says they will be supported later.

If you are outside the US: Anthropic has not announced when it will open outside the US. Also, paying with Link requires a US payment method.

How to join the waitlist

  1. Go to the Claude Duet product page and click “Join the waitlist.”
  2. Enter your name and email. If you already use Claude, enter the email of your Claude account.
  3. Choose your Claude plan and phone type (iPhone or Android).
  4. Optional: your job, and the first thing you would hand over to Claude Duet.
  5. Submit. Anthropic opens access in waves and emails you when it is your turn.
  6. After you get the invitation, open the email on your phone and follow the iPhone or Android steps. Sign in to your phone with the Apple or Google account that uses the same email, then open Claude Duet and sign in with your Claude account. After you accept the invitation, the app may take a few minutes to become available.

The waitlist email must match your Claude account and the Apple or Google account on your phone, because access is tied to that email.

The official help center lists the eligibility requirements, including a US Claude account.

What it cannot do yet

  • You cannot choose the model. It always uses Claude Opus 5.5 and decides for itself how much effort each task needs. You also cannot watch its browser screen or take over.
  • It cannot see files on your computer or all of your Projects in Claude; it can read your work in Claude but cannot change it.
  • It cannot make phone calls or send text messages. Slack has some limits, and Microsoft 365 cannot be connected yet.
  • It may misread a thread, misjudge what is urgent, or miss something that arrived between two checks.
  • Anthropic says it is built for work, so personal errands such as booking tickets are weaker.

Similar products

Reuters named OpenAI’s dots and Meta’s Muse as competitors to Claude Duet; xAI’s Grok Bot is a similar product too.

  • ChatGPT dots: OpenAI’s always-on AI agent, with its own cloud computer. The personal plan requires ChatGPT Pro, from US$100 per month; Free, Go, and Plus cannot use it. Pro’s first wave excludes the EEA, Switzerland and the UK; check your account screen.
  • Meta Muse: a personal AI agent app Meta launched on September 8, 2026. It is available in the US and Canada, and there is no official timeline for other regions.
  • Grok Bot: an AI employee platform where each Bot has a fixed role, logs in to apps on a cloud computer, and can also start work on a schedule. New subscriptions start at The X Subscription Premium (US$30 per month, before tax).

Penchan’s Takeaway

Claude Duet suits people who keep an eye on many apps every day, such as small shop owners and freelancers; Anthropic also says it is built for professionals and small business owners.

Claude Duet is not available outside the US yet. If you want to try ChatGPT dots, the personal plan requires ChatGPT Pro (from US$100 per month), and whether your region is open depends on your account screen. Grok Bot’s new subscriptions start at The X Subscription Premium (US$30 per month, before tax); see the overviews above.

AI is shifting from “waiting for your question” to “telling you first what needs you.”
